CHAPTER FOURTEEN
It should have deterred her, the fact that the person guiding her to the bunker was Brook, the person she trusted the least. She could imagine what she must have looked like shuffling through the forest, mouth hung open, eyes fixed ahead like a sniffer dog. Whatever she was hunting was more important than self-preservation. The truth will set you free. The phrase popped into her head.
When people had children or other family members go missing, they would always say that not knowing was the worst. Not knowing will drive you insane. That couldn't be right, not if the worst-case scenario was the alternative. Yet no one could resist the lure of curiosity reeling them in. Dawn was dangling at the end of that line, offering herself up with the promise of resolution, a freedom that only came from truth.
She got down on the ground. "I need a minute." Brook stood over her, not saying a word. Ants crawled in the dirt around her hands and she watched them move with such purpose, like an orchestrated ballet, each with their own job. She brought her face closer to them. Did they perceive this enormous creature that towered over them? Some marched in lines, like orderly pedestrians making their way down a busy street. It was a city in of itself, as real as the one in which she lived. She could watch them for hours, the patterns they made, and wished she could see what they saw, what the world looked like from their point of view.
"Come on." Brook tried to pull her up but Dawn couldn't tear herself away.
"No more drugs for you." The sickly sweet voice was back. It should have made her nervous, but in some strange way, she liked it. The non-threatening childlike timbre took her back to when they were actually friends. Had they been in this exact spot together before? Where had it all gone wrong? Brook almost looked like she did back then in the right light. The hint of freckles on her nose and those huge eyes. Up close in this light, they weren't that dark, angry color she'd seen earlier. Flecks of blue danced in smoky gray.
"You have amazing eyes." Couldn't she still reach her? Dawn didn't want to argue. She wasn't a fighter at heart. She could when she had to, but why choose anger? These new fond feelings came from nowhere, but they felt so powerful.
"Come on." Brook yanked her arm.
"The gallows," Dawn muttered, looking up as they passed under the two bent trees.
"This way." Brook turned left, and they passed the den that Dawn had watched them from earlier. It looked so much bigger from the outside than it did on the inside. She wondered how long it went on for, if it joined other tunnels like a subway network for animals. They were close. She kept her eyes close to the ground waiting for it to appear until she caught a flash of something from the corner of her eye.
